Spell check

Would someone please tell me the proper way to spell this word? I've seen it done different ways by different people. Its kind of starting to drive me crazy... I'm hoping together we can figure this one out!

YA!
YEAH!
YAY!
YEA!
Would anyone like me to add a different spelling to the list?

Here is how I've always learned it:

Yay is the proper way to celebrate...like YAY we won!
Yeah is in agreement...like Yeah, I know what you mean or Yeah, that was a cool movie
Ya is I don't know, Ya Ya Sisterhood?
Yea is the opposite of Nay when you are voting.

So Yay would be the correct one to use - just my .02 on it :)

Thanks Christie!

What is interesting is that "Yay" is the only one spell check doesn't like.

Christie is correct as far as this English teacher is concerned. A+ Christie!

I'll also add that "Ya" is a "word" (not really one, just a shortened version of 'you') I'd use like this when showing how we often shorten words in our daily speech: "I'll see ya tomorrow."

Randomly I'll also add that the correct spelling of the contraction you + all is: y'all NOT: ya'll... For anyone who cares! Ha! A pet peeve of southerners...

I'm SO glad you clarified this... I've thought about doing a post about this, but thought it might come off sounding too "Snotty English teacherish" =) Not everyone is interested in grammar, and some (like my mom) gets REALLY offended when they are told the correct way to say/spell something...

Thanks Amber! I often wonder this myself. Sometimes I will totally reword my sentence so I don't have to use it. I am always wonder if I am spelling it correctly or using it properly.
I guess this is one more reason to HS we will get to learn all this over again :)

See...this is my biggest qualm about English. So many words with similar spellings mean completely different things...like there, they're and their... your/you're...wood/would...and my nemesis since/sense
